Family Services

Lorain County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Inc. is the largest provider of alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention and intervention services including:

Intervention Services

Services are designed to assist families who have concerns about a loved one's alcohol or drug use.  The program consists of education regarding the intervention process, a self-assessment, and an individual meeting with a counselor to determine the best course of action for the family.

 

Family Centers

LCADA currently operates Family Centers in Elyria, Lorain, and Wellington.  Services provided at these sites include social, recreational and educational activities that promote alcohol/drug-free lifestyles.

 

Parenting & Family Management Services

Services are designed to assist parents and families to reduce the risk of alcohol and drug use among their children and adolescents.  Programming is also available to assist families (both adults and youth) to deal with the impact of a loved one's alcohol/drug use.

·         Grandparents Raising Another Generation: Custodial grandparents learning skills to enable them to provide a positive environment for grandchildren living in their care. Services are also provided to the children living in their care assisting them to develop skills necessary to make good decisions, manage feelings, develop positive self esteem, and live a healthy alcohol/drug-free life style.

·         Young Mothers: Teen mothers developing the skills necessary to raise their children in a positive, alcohol/drug-free environment.  Interactive groups between mothers and their infants/toddlers are also provided to promote healthy relationships and positive childhood development.

·         AOD Education for Families: Education and support services for parents and families concerned about an adolescent’s alcohol/drug usage or other acting out behaviors.

·         Parents in Recovery: Parenting skills education for parents in recovery from their own addiction.

Outreach Services

 

Speaker's Bureau

Speakers are available to address your school, church, club, civic organization, etc. on a wide range of topics related to alcohol & drugs; treatment and prevention services; individual, family and community assets; HIV/AIDS; and Alcohol/Drug Related Birth Defects.

 

HIV/AIDS Prevention, Education & Awareness

Speaking engagements, education sequences, community awareness, professional staff training, as well as problem identification and referral services are provided regarding HIV/AIDS, TB, Hepatitis, risk factors for infection, and positive lifestyle choices that individuals can make to eliminate and reduce their risks.

 

Alcohol/Drug Related Birth Defects Prevention, Education & Awareness

Speaking engagements, educational sequences, community awareness, professional staff training, and problem identification and referral services are provided regarding alcohol/drug related birth defects.

 

Information Resource Centers

LCADA prevention staff has current, factual and culturally relevant informational materials regarding mood altering substances and abuse available for distribution.  LCADA has established resource libraries in Lorain, Elyria and Wellington for community usage and a professional reference/study library in Lorain for community leaders and professionals. 

 

Problem Identification & Referral

Services target individuals who have indulged in illegal and/or age inappropriate use of alcohol, tobacco or drugs.  Programming is designed to determine whether these behaviors can be changed through education. These programs are not a substitute for assessment and treatment services. Individuals who need assessment and treatment services are referred to appropriate facilities.

Youth Services

Children of Substance Abuser Services: Assisting youths to understand addiction, the impact of parental addiction on families, and personal self-care/recovery activities.

Alcohol, Tobacco & Drug Free Social and Recreational Activities: Social and recreational activities to show that mood-altering substances are not necessary to have a good time.

Community Service Projects: Providing opportunities for high-risk youths to gain personal pride by helping others.

Education Groups: Educating and motivating at-risk youths to make positive lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of becoming involved with alcohol/drugs.

EHS Girls & EHS Coeds: Begun as an education program for high-risk youths, these youths have progressed to the point of designing and implementing service projects for the community and education/awareness campaigns for their peers.

Kingdom Kids: Middle School youth developing the skills necessary for making good personal choices.

LifeSkills Center: Educational services regarding risk and protective factors are provided to youths (16–22 y/o) who have resumed their pursuit of a high school diploma.

Community Services

 

Community Based Process: Services designed to train and equip community organizations to promote asset building and risk reduction among youths, families and communities.

·         Drug Free Workplace Training

·         In-services for Educators, Faith Community Leaders, College Resident Advisors, and other Individuals in Positions of Influence

Consultation and Collaboration with other Coalitions/Civic Organizations: Some of our partners include:  Lorain County Communities that Care;  AIDS Task Force;  Family Care Center;  Kinship Care; and Oberlin College Student Health Services.

Environmental Services: Working with government and community groups to develop ordinances and policies to reduce the risk of community residents becoming harmfully involved with mood altering substances.  Projects engaged in include: banning alcohol use on city owned properties, enforcing laws prohibiting alcohol sales to minors, mandating the lighting of alleys behind bars, building recreational facilities for youths, and neighborhood watch programs.
